MEET DUSTY FROM "THE NIGHTMARE AFFAIR"

THE NIGHTMARE AFFAIR
BY MINDEE ARNETT

CHARACTER INTERVIEW
PART ONE:

DUSTY EVERHART

As if being a Nightmare and living in your mother’s infamous shadow isn’t tough enough, imagine having to piece together clues to catch a killer at your school, Arkwell Academy. Meet Dusty Everhart. This lively redhead sat down with ONCE UPON A TIME IN WRITERLAND to chat about life, love and Magickind. And did we mention she’s only sixteen?

ONCE UPON A TIME:
Hi, Dusty! Thank-you so much for chatting with us here in Writerland.

DUSTY:

You’re welcome!

ONCE UPON A TIME:
Little is known about Nightmares. I’m embarrassed to say I never even knew of their existence! Could you explain to those of us who are ‘ordinary’, what exactly is a Nightmare?

DUSTY:
Well, we’re a type of magical being who has to feed on the stuff of dreams in order to live. But don’t worry. We’re mostly harmless. We just sit on your chest while you’re sleeping and hangout in your dreams. It’s a little weird, I know, but most people never even know we were there.

ONCE UPON A TIME:
Wow, that’s so interesting. Thank-you for clarifying. Now word on the street is that, because of beings such as Nightmares, Arkwell Academy isn’t your average boarding school. How is Arkwell different from a non-Magi institution?

DUSTY:
It’s not really very different. I mean we have computers and dry erase boards, stuff like that. And we study mostly normal subjects like English and Math. Don’t get me wrong, we study magic, too, but it’s mixed in with the regular human curriculum. Of course, there are some noticeable differences. Our computer and other electronics have actual personalities, and there are some strange creatures roaming about here and there.

ONCE UPON A TIME:
I would have loved to attend a school like that. It must be so much fun. Being so close in proximity to many other students must make it easy to forge tight friendships and relationships. I’ve been told by your manager that I can’t ask you about any romantic relations you may have, but, hypothetically, what kind of boy do you see yourself with?

DUSTY:
Somebody tall, dark, and handsome? I don’t really know. I suppose I’d be happy with someone I have things in common with, like music and sports and stuff.

ONCE UPON A TIME:
I'm sure you'll find someone like that soon. With everything going on at Arkwell, it must be difficult to concentrate on your studies. What aspirations do you have after high school ends?

DUSTY:
I have no idea. I wish I did! But honestly, at the moment I’m just hoping I make it through high school.

ONCE UPON A TIME:
One step at a time! That sounds like a great plan. Finally, I’d like to ask you what you think your strengths and weaknesses are.

DUSTY:
Well, I’m a bit of a klutz and I struggle with my magic a lot. Selene, my best friend, keeps telling me I’ll get the hang of it, but I’m not so sure. My biggest strength is probably my loyalty and determination.

ONCE UPON A TIME:
Some very insightful answers from a very intelligent sixteen-year-old. Thanks for the interview, Dusty!

DUSTY:
My pleasure!

ONCE UPON A TIME:
If you’d like to find out more about Dusty, Arkwell and being a Nightmare, please go HERE. And stay tuned. Next time, we have an exclusive interview with Dusty’s best friend at Arkwell, Selene!

                              ABOUT THE BOOK:

Sixteen-year-old Dusty Everhart breaks into houses late at night, but not because she’s a criminal. No, she’s a Nightmare.

Literally.

Being the only Nightmare at Arkwell Academy, a boarding school for magickind, and living in the shadow of her mother’s infamy, is hard enough. But when Dusty sneaks into Eli Booker’s house, things get a whole lot more complicated. He’s hot, which means sitting on his chest and invading his dreams couldn’t get much more embarrassing. But it does. Eli is dreaming of a murder.

Then Eli's dream comes true.

Now Dusty has to follow the clues—both within Eli’s dreams and out of them—to stop the killer before more people turn up dead. And before the killer learns what she’s up to and marks her as the next target.
